Phi Beta Sigma gives to American Cancer Society

In addition to their donation, they hosted a "Cancer and You" seminar in the University College Movie Theater. Diana Burkett of the American Cancer Society informed students about various cancers and their treatments. "Early detection is your best treatment against cancer," she stated. She also urged students to be aware of any changes in their bodies because "cancer doesn't care how old you are or what color you are."
She presented students with some prominent cancers in African Americans. "Prostate cancer is the highest killer in African American men not because of lack of treatment but because it's not detected as early." She continued with breast cancer and colon cancer. "Breast cancer kills more African American women than any other race. Colon cancer is very prominent in the African American culture because of diets."
Students not only learned from the seminar but were impressed with Phi Beta Sigma's efforts. "I didn't know that there are so many different kinds of cancer. I also thought that most people wanted treatment, but most people don't want to go through chemotherapy," said sophomore architecture major Daryl Flaggs.
Lady of the Dove contestant Roshanna Williams expressed her feelings about the donation. "I am proud to be a Lady of the Dove representative for the fine men of Phi Beta Sigma as they donate money to an excellent cause."
The men of Phi Beta Sigma are serious about giving back as stated by chapter president Eugene Lawson IV. "The objective of this presentation was to show students that we actually do use the money for a beneficial purpose. We are giving back."
