The 49th Annual Ministers' Conference, a gathering of religious leaders to discuss important matters, was held Feb. 6 and 7 in the Memorial Student Center auditorium.

The conference began at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday with a series of lectures covering a wide range of topics.

More than 100 ministers from Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma were in attendance. The conference was to raise funds for the Ministers' Conference Scholarship Fund, which provides monetary assistance to potential students of Prairie View A&M University.

James E Johnson, of the Lively Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Simonton, Texas, said, "We always hear the cliché, 'a mind is a terrible thing to waste,' and we are here to bring substance to the cliché."

The principal purpose of the conference, in addition to the scholarship fund, was to provide a forum for religious leaders to share thoughts on their goals in their respective ministries.

This year's conference was focused around the Christian denomination "Church of God in Christ." Bishop Daniel L Hines, a bishop of the Church of God in Christ, delivered the Ministers' convocation address Wednesday morning.

Several "Outstanding Leadership" awards were also presented to area pastors who have distinguished themselves throughout the preceding year. The Baptist Student Movement Choir also provided entertainment for the visiting ministers.

Dean Charles Lewter, dean of the All Faith's Chapel, said, "The conference is a vital part of the All Faith's Chapel's Ministry. We hope and pray that our students, faculty, and staff will appreciate the service we render to the community."

Next year will be the 50th anniversary of the conference and the All Faiths Chapel has announced that the golden celebration of the Annual Ministers' Conference will take place in February 2008.
