The Upsilon chapter of Sigma Tau Delta held its induction ceremony in the conference room of Hilliard Hall Monday.

Sigma Tau Delta, which is the English honor society, inducted members who have 12 or more hours of English credit and a GPA over 3.0 in English classes.

The program opened with a brief introduction by Dr. Dijun Liu, head of the Department of Languages and Communications. Touching on the importance of English studies in society,Liu said, "I am very happy to be around such excellent students...who will soon make for a more excellent society."

Dr. Tonya Scott swore in the seven new inductees to the organization.The new members were Ayana Young, Alvah Harell, Ashley Fields-Garcia, Nicole Renee Ray, Rhonda Phillips, Sean Mitchell, and Donald Kegler.

Dr. John Harty entertained the gathering with a poem, and Rhonda Philips and Alvah Harrell led the ceremony in singing "Imagine" by John Lennon.

Harrel, an inductee from the English graduate program, spoke on the merits of Prairie View's master's program in English, saying, "The study of English has given me a passion to learn...and the opportunity to introduce the beauty and splendor of English to others."

The ceremony ended with closing remarks by Dr. D. K. Chatha, and a reception.
