Members of the student body mingled Jan. 23 while the Office of Student Activities kicked off the semester with an open house on the first and second floor foyers of the Memorial Student Center.

The event, which takes place at the beginning of every semester, invites students to view some of the many organizations that Prairie View A&M University offers.

Assistant Director of Student Activities and Leadership, Denise Simmons, said, "There are over 100 organizations offered here at Prairie View, and about 40 of these organizations, which includes Greek, special interest, and religious groups, participate in the open house."

Simmons added, "The reason we hold the open house is to give the students here a chance to see what catches their interest, and it also gives them the opportunity to be involved."

The foyers were packed as students gathered to speak with representatives.

Jolandria Johnson, president of the Student Nurses' Association, said, "By joining an organization, you can receive community service hours. Projects that we do in our organization usually stimulate the minds of our members and help them know what they want to do."

Johnson also encouraged students to research different organizations. " I think people who are interested in joining should look into an organization before jumping into it."

Sophomore class president Robert Powell said, " The most important benefit of belonging to an organization is that you get a chance to network by communicating with your constituents and being more involved on campus."

Although attending open house could get students recognized, it gives them a chance to meet people who they may benefit from.

Simmons encouraged students to stroll through different tables and to become more active on the school campus.
