Panthers avoid a weekend sweep

The Prairie View A&M Panthers (13-15, 7-5) avoided a three-game weekend sweep by defeating the Southern Jaguars, 6-2 in Baton Rouge, La., Sunday.

The team was led by pitcher Wrandal Taylor who struck out six batters in his complete game, as he was helped defensively with solid play from the Panthers. The team was error free and put the ball into play. The first run came in the third inning from a Myrio Richard RBI double. In the fourth inning, two runs followed that gave the Panthers the immediate lead, and as the game continued the Panthers' lead grew while Southern remained stagnant. In the sixth, smart baseball and quick thinking led to the Panthers' win with three insurance runs that put the win in the bag.

The two games on Saturday were won by Southern, 3-6 and 2-4. In the first game, Southern (10-10, 8-4) jumped out to a two run lead in the first inning from a homerun and RBI single. The Panthers fought back in the top of the sixth inning, scoring three runs to take the lead. All in the same inning, the Jaguars bounced back to tax the Panthers for four runs which closed out the game.

In the second contest, the score was tight at two in the second inning until the Jaguars scored one run each in the fifth and sixth inning.

The Panthers now prepare for another conference three game road trip against UAPB April 4 and 5 in Pine Bluff, Ark. at 1 p.m.
