The Prairie View Council of the League of Latin American Citizens hosted a district convention April 19 in the MSC.

The local chapters of the organization invited area universities and high schools to attend the convention.

Among the Universities represented were Texas Southern University, University of Houston, and Texas A&M (Galveston).

Maricruz Mosqueda, president of the local council said, "We really thought that this would be a good opportunity to recruit. This is a good opportunity for young students to get exposed to a college campus and good exposure for Prairie View."

Texas state representative Rick Noriega addressed the attendees about the importance of the Hispanic population in local and national politics, and urged students to become more active politically.

Sigma Lambda Beta also provided entertainment in the form of a short step show.

Though Prairie View A&M University is an institution that historically serves African-American students, LULAC has found much support on campus from Hispanic and black students.

"Prairie View is really an all-inclusive school," said Lettie Raab, executive director of university College and advisor to the program, "Other groups and organizations on campus have been really helpful in assisting LULAC."

Prairie View's LULAC chapter was established in 2002 and has since become a well-respected council in the local district, being awarded the district's "Council of the Year" award for this year.
