Brown describes his journey
"You don't choose PV PV chooses you," says 2012-2013 Student Government Association vice-president and junior mass communication major Jarrick Brown.
Brown's family is a great influence and instilled the importance of being active in the community and obtaining a solid education at an early age.
The son of a minister, Brown values his faith and it plays an important role in his everyday life.
His Christian background proved to be influential in his role as a devotional leader of the Texas Association of Future Educators his junior and senior year of high school.
Brown was also active in other clubs and organizations, many that may be unexpected, during his time at Ozen High School in Beaumont, Texas.
It is no surprise Brown held officer positions in student council, National Beta Club, NAACP, and served as student director/editor and television manager during high school, but his involvement was not limited to clubs. During his senior year he decided to join his high school band The Blue Wave Marching Band, and played the saxophone.
Even with all of these extracurricular activities, Brown has never let his grades slip and was inducted into the National Honor Society at the end of his junior year.
The summer prior to his senior year in high school, he knew Prairie View A&M University was the school for him while attending the Panthers College Institute.
"The atmosphere was amazing and ever since then, PV was my choice of getting a higher education," he says. "PV is the perfect distance from home. It wasn't too close, but not to far either."
During his freshman year, Brown decided to run for freshmen class president and fell short, but credits his PALs Bobby J. Smith II, former SGA president and Jazmine Jones, former SGA Executive Secretary for encouraging him to stay involved and to work with various committees.
"I got involved with SGA because I felt I could make a difference," says Brown. "SGA and PV mean the world to me. SGA helped build me as a person. I learned how to communicate with others, network, and work on my time management skills because of this organization."
Brown encourages everyone to get involved and volunteer. He explains, "The office of student engagement makes it easy for people to create their own organization. You just need ten people and an advisor and you can have your own club i.e. a pencil breaking."
Brown has several major projects in progress for Prairie View A&M University.
"Everything I am working on we, the classes of 2013-2016, may not see it, but I am here to better PV for the future," he said. "I am Jarrick Brown. No other words describe me but Jarrick Brown."
