Voters registration comes to a close
Thousands of students on college campuses will attempt to vote and be turned away on Nov. 6. "Sorry, you didn't register in this county, so therefore your vote will not count," students will be told.
The Young Democrats of Prairie View A&M University have been asking students around campus if they have registered to vote to avoid this problem.
"This election will have a bigger turn out not only for young voters, but voters as a whole, because there is more at stake and more people seem to be interested," said County Democratic Party chairperson John Mull.
According to Ellen Shelburne, voter registrar of Waller County, voters must be registered in the state of Texas by Oct. 9. This is the last day to register to vote or make any necessary changes for the Nov.6 election.
The voter registration deadline is 30 days before the election. If the 30th day before election day is a weekend or national holiday, registration forms are due the next business day. Because the 30th day before a Tuesday is always a Sunday, the deadline for all elections held on a Tuesday, including all federal elections, is 29 days before the election. People cannot register to vote in the state of Texas after this date.
The voter registration card, also known as your proof of residency, will be sent within 30 days. It is important to make sure that all of the information on the card is correct and that the card is not misplaced. This card is used as proof of identification at the polls.
Before stepping into the voting booth it is also important to research the candidates and find out what their views are on issues of importance while simply researching who the candidates are and what they in turn stand for.
Odis Favors, a member of Young Democrats, said, "For those who don't plan on voting in this year's election, they are missing out on a huge opportunity for their voice to be heard. Many people say that their votes are irrelevant but in reality every little vote counts."
