Panthers win close game against Southern
The Lady Panthers Volleyball team conquered the Southern University Jaguars in a close 3-2 win at the Cliford Seymour Gym in Baton Rouge, LA.
The Panthers improved their record in SWAC conference play to 3-0, as they came together to notch a 3-2 win. The Panthers had several players set season and career highs during the five-game match.
The Panthers began with a 15-11 lead in the first set. After the back and forth start of the set, Prairie View went on a 10-3 run to win the set 25-14.
Southern came back in the second set. The Jaguars opened the set 14-11. A Southern attack error helped the Panthers pull even at 17, but the Jaguars put the match away with a 4-0 run.
Prairie View took charge again in the third set. The set began tightly contested, as the score was tied 4-4. Prairie View then went in an 11-0 run to put the set away.
Senior right side hitter Bruna Menezes scored the final point during the run with an ace.
The fourth set was the closest of the game as Southern edged out a 25-22 win to send the match into a final set.
During the fifth set senior outside hitter Breanna McNeil scored a kill to tie the game at seven. After a run by Southern, the Panthers went on a late 8-4 run to finish the game and walk away with a win.
Prairie View will play rival Texas Southern University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Houston, Texas.
