Mr. and Miss University Village crowned
DeAdrian Johnson and Ashley Williams were named Mr. and Miss University Village on Oct. 9.
Both Johnson, a sophomore mass communication major, and Williams, a senior biology major, entered the pageant in hopes to try something different and reach outside of the box and area of comfort.
"I was not seeking to be Miss University Village coming into this school year. Yet I vied for the position because I wanted to grow as a leader and challenge myself, but in the process of becoming Miss University Village, I realized how much I truly wanted the opportunity to influence my peers," said Williams.
Each contestant helped move the pageant from segment to segment, but the talents showcased where the true competition would begin.
"The competition was crazy. Everyone did something different and brought it. I'm really glad that everyone was able to showcase their talents on stage," said Johnson.
Although the competition was fierce, Johnson and Williams brought their own unique dynamics to the talent portion of the competition.
"Through this process, I learned that I possessed a gift that I never really knew I had," Williams said, as she described her monologue by Janetteikz, which depicted some realistic scenarios of relationships and the female perception.
Johnson said, "The competitive side of the pageant did not show itself until the day of the pageant. We were a family first and foremost, trying to help each other where we could."
The competition may not have started until that night, but Williams certainly brought it. As she took home six of the seven individual awards alongside her crown, leaving Johnson as the winner of question and answer.
Commemorating the beginning of their reign during the homecoming coronation, Johnson and Williams hope to implement their prospective platforms, aiding not only University Village residents, but also Prairie View students as a whole.
"My platform is a personal motto, 'knowing what you stand for will limit what you fall for,' which is simply a testament that as long as you have a basis and foundation in something, you can accomplish anything," said Johnson.
The new University Village royalty say they are grounded in God, looking to use that foundation to lead another generation of productive Panthers.
"Every moment, I want to glorify God and give my best for him," said Williams.
Motivated and excited for the year to come, University Village and the campus as a whole can look forward to what Johnson and Williams will bring to the hill even in the year beyond their reign.
