Panthers bite back at Cotton Bowl Classic
The Prairie View A&M Panthers football team, in new fatigue uniforms, battled hard in the State Fair Classic to get its first win and keep the Grambling State Tigers at a defeating season record.
The Panthers set the tone of the game from the beginning.
Freshman running back Johnta Herbert outran the entire Grambling defense on a 75-yard kick return, scoring the first touchdown within the first 10 seconds.
In defense senior Jarvis Wilson had a total of five tackles leading in the first quarter. The Panthers ended the with a 33-yard field goal by sophomore Chistopher Barrick, making the lead 10-7.
The pace slowed down the second quarter for the Panthers, allowing the Tigers to take the lead momentarily, 17-14.
Prairie View had a total of 199 passing yards throughout the game, gaining an average 7.3 yards per play.
Sophomore Courtney Brown led in rushing yards gaining 114 yards in the game.
Junior quarterback Jerry Lovelocke carried the Panthers in the third quarter scoring the only touchdown in the game to extend the lead 24-14.
Sophomore Jerome Howard led in tackles by the end of the game with seven solo tackles and 11 assists.
Herbert led in all returns with his remarkable 75-yard touchdown off a kick return totaling 81 yards in the game.
The fourth quarter went by smoothly for the Panthers, hindering the Tigers from scoring the second half.
Sophomore Courtney Brown scored the last touchdown of the game in a 45-yard run with 1:38 left on the clock leading 31-14.
This win will give Prairie View its first consecutive victory since the 1963-64 season.
