Public figures have public influence
"I'm a Republican voting for Mitt Romney/You lazy b*****s is f*****g up the economy."
Nicki Minaj's infamous quote from a recent feature on a Lil' Wayne track brings cause to her endorsement of Romney in the 2012 presidential election which she later reneged in early September via Twitter.
As Just Brittany and Beat King visited Prairie View A&M University's last "Hump Day on the Hill" to encourage students to register to vote in the 2012 election, I began to wonder how important celebrities are in a political campaign?
After speaking to Just Brittany and BeatKing in hopes to create some sort of voter's registration feature for the newspaper, it seemed more beneficial to instead evaluate their inferiority in any political conversation.
Although BeatKing gave a more intellectual response to questions asked about the presidential campaign and voter's registration, he lacked any real evidentiary backing in anything he said.
Obviously literate enough to understand the importance of voting and why to vote for one candidate over another, he failed to actually do any viable research to understand why his 2012 vote will be cast for Obama rather than Romney.
"I did not get a chance to vote because of how many shows I had," BeatKing said about the 2008 presidential election.
Honestly, how busy are you that you could not register and vote?
Have you even hit the Billboard #100 place yet? Um, not that I have seen.
That may be a bit a harsh, but the point is to emphasize that although celebrity influence in elections may sway some voters, can you really take an endorsement seriously if an artist is not registered to vote or if they have never voted in an election?
Again, BeatKing is definitely #winning if an intelligence Top 100 existed while Just Brittany quite frankly is clearly "slower."
Probing for her opinions of Romney, I mistakenly ventured to ask for her opinion of Romney's 47 percent comments, she looked in my face dumbfounded like, "Girl, he had said what?!" to be followed by, "I don't know anything about that, but I'm #TeamObama."
It is hard to understand how someone can be a public figure and not know anything about the political scene, but it is even harder to understand how one can attempt to register someone to vote and have no idea why he or she is voting.
Nothing can smear the unwritten fact that celebrities, even ones who have yet to a see a credited hit like BeatKing and Just Brittany, influence the public that follows them.
Thus it's irresponsible for even self glorified one hit wonders to not understand what is going on politically, especially during a presidential election and most definitely if he or she chooses to stand up and endorse voter's registration.
I applaud both artists for their visit and thank them for their time, but I question whether this is truly a task either one of them should have taken on simply because of their ignorance whether it's derived from a lack of knowledge or inability to understand.
My voice is aggressive, but is based in an understanding of both candidates.
My view thus my voice will cast my vote Nov. 6, but what is mine is not yours.
Create your vote, follow the campaign...
