Finding love at first click
Since the beginning of time man has longed to find a mate, a soul mate, a true love and companionship.
Man has also gone to great lengths to find and obtain that love. Our eternal souls yearn for love.
What lengths would you go to finding love?
In modern day society there have very unique ways of finding love. One way, brought out of the 21st century, is the controversial online dating.
With so many pros and cons, everyone seems to wonder if it works.
There have been numerous cases of couples finding themselves married from a relationship found over eHarmony. Some couples find their happily ever after.
With a net worth over $140 million, eHarmony has been the biggest online social meeting place in the 21st century. So why do we still turn our noses up to the fact of online dating?
Is it the fear of deceit, or the fictional persona that the person you believe to be a doctor and Harvard graduate is actually a teacher from Indiana?
Online dating creates a venue for people to find someone with common goals and interests.
EHarmony asks serious questions to in order categorize who you are and who you will be compatible with.
Websites have even gotten more creative, marketing to a specific race. Blackpeoplmeet.com has marketed an entire site to just as they say, "How black people meet.com."
For those who engage in online dating or the dating system cheaters, there are a substantial amount of websites to choose from.
"There are so many sites and ways to use social media and online dating sites to meet someone," said office of student engagement assistant director Orok Orok. "I think that it is cheating though. It is like taking the hard part out of the equation. All of those first date questions are asked for you."
People can also use social media to change or alter their persona to seem more attractive. People have developed marketing techniques and strategies.
"The dating system is all fueled through the art of meeting people," said Orok. "Striking up a random conversation with the cutie you see at the bookstore may result to a successful and happy marriage."
How would you know if your eyes were glued to the eHarmony app on your phone?
"Face to face meeting allows your perception of one another to not be blocked and the truth of the connection between two people is revealed," he added.
How do you really know if Mr. seximan1000 is not a 55-year-old woman with an eating disorder? Online dating created an artificial spark that individuals do not realize it is missing.
Four out of four students on the Prairie View A&M University campus said they would not date online.
"I do not want to be on a shows like Catfish where people who host fake profiles and have people to fall in love with the fake persona," said Aujalque Thrower, a junior nutrition major.
With social networking websites playing such a prevalent role in the lives of people today, it is only a matter of time before online dating becomes an everyday part of life for everyone.
After meeting someone for the first time, you go home and look them up on Facebook and see a different side of them.
With doing that you have perceived them in two ways and are able to make better judgments off of what you see.
"The information given out on social networks can be very detrimental to up and coming relationships. The harmful part of it, exist in the levels of a relationship. Social media can prove that maybe you are not on a level where someone is entirely comfortable revealing himself or herself to you face to face," said Orok.
If your relationship is not at the point of a day by day check in and you use the information you obtain from social networks to check up on someone, you may be able to see inconsistencies within the person very easily.
"The pressure for relationship to happen faster happened because of social networking sites," said Mikayla Roland, a junior business major. "Social networking sites put individuals embarking on a new relationship in an awkward position to take a personal interest in their new admirer's profile."
Anything not liked by the individual on both sides could cost the relationship from getting off the ground.
So portrayals of self on Twitter, Facebook, or any social networking sites may cause you to lose an opportunity or relationship.
"Post wisely," said Roland.
One can say the dynamic of dating has changed rapidly throughout the years. It is evolving with the times. Trying to find love and keeping it has gotten harder.
With the online world adding a second approval process and online dating becoming the forefront of how people meet, it is a fact that true love is not locked away in a tower anymore.
It is surfing the web looking for love at first click and matrimony at first request.
