Stay informed about breast cancer
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a period of time committed to increase knowledge on the second most common type of cancer of women in the United States.
Many people will wear pink to symbolize their participation and support in bringing a better understanding to this fatal illness.
The most recognized symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness is the pink ribbon. People across the nation will adorn them on their bodies, cars, and anywhere else they can put them.
"I like when athletes wear pink in their uniforms to show their support for breast cancer awareness. I think Prairie View should do something like that to show their support," said freshman human performance major Giles Prather.
Breast cancer is not limited to women; it can affect men as well. Many men are not aware this disease can affect them. "I knew that men could be affected by it, but I didn't know how," said junior agriculture major Diamond Moss.
Breast cancer is simply the uncontrolled development of cells of breast cells, and therefore can affect both genders.
It is caused by a genetic abnormality and it is important to check family history to understand the risks and factors of this disease. Approximately 12 percent of women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime.
"People do not realize the seriousness of breast cancer. It is a disease, but not a death sentence. Life doesn't end with a diagnosis," said nurse practitioner Keishya McKinney.
A woman's risk of breast cancer approximately doubles if she has a mother, sister, or daughter who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Fifteen percent of women who get breast cancer have a family member that has been diagnosed with it.
"I appreciate all who support the breast cancer movement in the month of October, but more attention is needed all year round" said breast cancer survivor Kathy Lee. "I encourage every woman to get a yearly mammogram. I don't wish this upon anyone."
The chance of acquiring breast cancer can be significantly reduced by maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which includes not smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, and exercising regularly.
