Basketball teams play home season openers women
In a back and forth game, the Prairie View A&M Lady Panthers could not hold on losing their home opener 62-55 to the Lady Jacks of Stephen F. Austin University.
Prairie View began the game with great poise, and playing staunch defense.
The Lady Panthers caused seven turnovers in the first 12 minutes of the game.
They were aggressive going after every missed shot, grabbing five offensive rebounds during that same time span.
Prairie View allowed a 9-2 SFA offensive run, before outscoring the opponent 7-6 to finish the half up 33-32.
The second half of the game was a constant ebb and flow of lead changes, as each team traded baskets.
Kiara Etienne led the Lady Panthers in scoring with a game-high 23 points.
Latia Williams and Larissa Scott both proved consistent offense as well, as they contributed 15 points and 14 points respectively.
SFA offense was led by a balanced attack, with four Lady Jacks scoring at least nine points in the contest.
The Lady Jacks were led in scoring by sophomore Brittney Matthew who scored 11 points.
The Lady Panthers had the lead late in the second half 50-49, when the lady Jacks began to take over the game.
SFA senior Ashlee Mells drove to the basket for a layup to give her team the lead 51-50 with 3:15 left.One possession later SFA scored another basket with a three-pointer from the left wing by forward Tierany Henderson. SFA iced the game with several free throws by center Porsha Roberts and Matthew to push the lead to 58-52.
The Lady Panthers would never recover, falling 62-55.
PVAMU outshot their opponent, going 39.3 percent from the field to SFA's 35.8 percent.
The difference in the game was free throw shooting, as the lady Panthers took less free throw shots (9-17 for PVAMU, 19-26 for SFA), and shot a lower percentage (52.9 percent to 73.1 percent).
The Lady Panthers look to score their first victory when they take the court again against Utah State University in Anchorage, Alaska in the Great Alaska Shootout next Tues., Nov. 20.
