Prairie View celebrates cultural diversity
Prairie View A&M University hosts its 8th annual Multicultural Affairs on Thursday, September 18th, "Welcome to the Hill" reception.
The purpose of the event was to educate the student body about the increasing diversity on campus.
Graduate student DJ Elevated set the ambiance with various genres of music that helped motivate interaction between the students and faculty involved.
"Students must learn to accept global diversity and new cultures because the work place is filled with different types of people," said multicultural affairs officer Elma Gonzalez.
The hosting organizations were League of United Latin American Citizens and Kappa Delta Chi Sorority Inc. They placed a specific emphasis on the freshman class to ensure a connection between them and their classmates.
Freshman civil engineer and architecture double major Thomas Rios said, "I'm already a good communicator, but the reception made me feel more comfortable and laid back. It's definitely great to meet new people. I'm looking forward to Salsa on the Hill, because of the celebration and community feel."
During the reception, the office of development emphasized the student giving campaign. The campaign will concentrate on promoting more charitable and philanthropic acts among students.
There are many annual events that are highly anticipated such as, Salsa on the Hill and Latin American Caribbean Day, along with other new events.
The latest addition is Guatemala Night, which will feature the movie "El Norte," a classic documentary that educates students about the tribulations of the process of becoming a legalized U.S. citizen.
With these innovated additions, Hispanic Heritage month is rising. Numerous constituents on campus are influencing diversity and inspiring other ethnicities to become culturally involved.
Gonzalez said, " We all have commonalties and when we come together we are happy because we are happiest among friends."
