Tour De Pink returns for the 8th year

Prairie View A&M University hosted the 8th annual Tour de Pink, Pink Ribbon Project on Sept. 16. Early Sunday morning, thousands of cyclists gathered at the university in support of breast cancer awareness and education outreach initiatives. The Pink Ribbon Project also helps patients attain proper screening in the Greater Houston area.
Each cyclist had to raise $125 for the thousands of women with breast cancer who are unable to afford mammograms.
Amongst the other cyclists, Dwight Sonnier, Courtney White, Corey Shy, Jeremy Craft, Robert Odhiambo, Kris Powell and Derek Williams were the first students from PVAMU to participate in Tour de Pink. The group raised about $700 selling cookies and were also given donations from several different organizations.
In a total of two hours the Prairie View assembled team finished 34 miles all together. They were supported by organizations such as B.L.A.C.K, the Purple Jackets, Undergraduate Medical Academy, the Honors Program, AKAs and the PVAMU women's basketball team. As the riders crossed the finish line, students cheered words of encouragement for all of them.
Senior biology major Corey Shy said, "It was truly one of my best experiences at PV. I really loved all the support my Prairie View family gave me and it was rewarding because we did it for a good cause." Shy is a member of the UMA and president of B.L.A.C.K. He says, "I hope this starts a new tradition for PV students to be cyclists in Tour de Pink in the years to come."
