Student Government Association works for change

By Robert Walker

Various changes are affecting students immensely across the campus. Adjustments do occur throughout each year, but are not always evident to the student body.
Over the years, the Student Government Association has emphasized the importance for students to be aware of the university's consistent changes to the fees, rules and regulations.
SGA positions are filled with students pursuing better accommodations for fellow students and incoming freshmen. These students have dedicated much of their time to improve the collegiate atmosphere and experience as much as possible.
Junior finance and accounting major Natambria Lockett said, "SGA acts as a liaison between the administration. I joined this organization because I wanted to be able to help create and begin to see the changes to help improve campus life for all students."
Students are able to suggest better adjustments and changes to SGA. They then determine the relevance of the suggestions during each weekly meeting and are proposed to administration for review. Upon this review surveys are constructed for all students to vote.
New ideas are discussed constantly, and longstanding poor regulations are fought against consistently. This strategic process has brought forth major changes such as better housing amenities, fee reductions, and enhancing different departments at the university.
Senior health and performance major Mahalia Smith said, "I am working on a Fun Day in the fall, to open up the lines of communication between students and administrators."
The College of Business, which will have a new building within the next three years, is a priority for SGA, propositioning to receive more scholarships, and extended tutoring hours.
SGA is also assisting Academic Affairs to improve its website. This is to help students understand the procedures of dropping and adding courses, and grade replacements requirements.
Anothermajor accommodation proposed by SGA and put into effect is Panther Plus Card. This card, taking place of the original PVAMU ID, has created a better method for receiving over payments from financial aid. Although there has been confusion, this change helped the over payment process run smoother, allowed easier access to purchase books, and has given incoming freshmen the opportunity for responsibility of having a checking account.
