Students prepare for their future
Prairie View A&M University's signature slogan reads "Prairie View Produces Productive People." This slogan has ignited a transformation in the way the administration and student body view this institution.
However, current students and administrators feel the university is not living up to that.
Dr. Amber Johnson, assistant professor of communication, said, "I do think there are areas that we can improve on to better prepare our students for the real world and those areas are accountability and critical thinking."
College is a place for these skills to be further developed and honed because they are a vital part of what is expected of employers in the corporate world.
Cherokee Daniels, a junior social work major, said, "Prairie View enables us instead of holding us accountable."
Johnson stresses the administrator's play in setting the standards students should uphold.
"We have to do a better job at holding our students accountable and ensuring that they turn in quality work on time," said Johnson.
Students believe that the professors and administrative members should be ensuring that each student is held accountable for earning a quality education, whereas some students believe it is the student who must be proactive with their education.
Jasmine Jones, a senior education major, said, "Prairie View will only lead us to a certain point with all of its resources, but what are you doing as a student to be prepared for the real world?"
"Prairie View Produces Productive People" serves as a reminder to all students, the opportunity they have to receive a higher education. It also reminds the administration about the reasons they are here and the importance of their roles.
"We need to implement more critical thinking skill building programs across the entire curriculum so our students will be much better equipped to handle real life situations that will challenge them to think beyond what has been required in the classroom thus far," said Johnson.
