Panthers fall but one stands out
The Prairie View A&M volleyball team let another opportunity slip through its hands against McNeese State in a 3-1 loss Thursday night in the William Nicks Building.
Identical to the loss it suffered to the Cowgirls just three days earlier, Prairie View hurt itself with untimely errors and a lack of being able to get hands on the ball at the front line.
McNeese State took the first two sets 26-24 and 25-18. However, Prairie View A&M bounced back with a 25-17 win in Set 3.
Sophomore middle Charae Caldwell and senior outside hitter Bruna Menezes combined for six kills during that game, and junior setter Kelsey Espinosa picked up eight of her 35 assists.
Prairie View A&M capitalized off 12 Cowgirls errors during that set. McNeese held off a late run by the Lady Panthers to take Set 4 in a 25-22 victory.
Menezes tied her season-high in kills with 17 against McNeese state and set a season-high .341 attack percentage in the process with just three errors in 41 attacks. Menezes has recorded double-digit kills in both matches against McNeese State (10 kills on Sept. 24).
Despite Menezes' standout performance, the Lady Panthers finished the game with 20 attack errors and just seven blocks in a match in which McNeese State had two players finish with double digit kills and attack percentages over .290 in Rachel Cagnina(15 Kills, .290 attack percentage) and Courtni Bauer (13 Kills, .320 attack percentage).
Prairie View A&M heads to Ruston, La. to take on Grambling at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3 in a conference showdown before going to Baton Rouge to participate in the Southern Tournament Oct. 5-6.
