Rose seeks to increase use of health center

The student body's perception of the Health Center is slightly tainted, but Information Specialist and Project Director of Panthers Promoting Healthy Decisions, Greg Rose hopes to change that perception.

Some students fail to utilize the available and convenient services provided by the center's employees. These students think the center is run by students or their information will not be confidential.

Rose said, "Many students don't know about the Health Center. Students that do know about the Health Center don't come here because they think other students are working with them and are able to see their profiles. Actually, that's not the case. Everything that is done at the health center is confidential. The only person seeing their information is the doctor."

To eliminate these rumors, the health center hires professionals capable of providing medical attention required by the student body.

Rose said: "We have one doctor, a head nurse and two regular nurses. We also have a radiologist that handles x-rays for the center and sports medicine. Since the center used to be a hospital, not only do our doctors see Prairie View's students, but also people around Waller County."

Panther PHDs is working to improve campus visibility and getting the word out on what the center has to offer. The organization also takes the responsibility of helping the campus and community make effective health decisions involving drugs, alcohol, and sex.

Rose said: "The center isn't totally vacant though. We do have a collection of students that come here on a daily basis for all types of matters. Students request to get shots, prescriptions, last minute remedies for sicknesses, etc. Students can also receive counseling at the new counseling center."
