Students push for Obama's second term
Barack Obama declared "Greater Together," a slogan to encourage the involvement of university-aged students to get involved in his 2012 campaign on Feb. 1.
Officially established in 2007, Obama's Greater Together Students for Obama is comprised of several university chapters dedicated to keeping Obama in the oval office.
Targeting those concerned with unemployment, education, and debt, Greater Together Students for Obama gives participants a greater sense of the American political scenery, blurring racial, economic, and age demographics that often separate our nation.
Currently no chapter of the organization is represented in the entire state of Texas yet the organization's webpage shares ways to reach out to local events like debate watch parties, poll watchers training, and phone bank blitz with local democratic organizations.
"Being one of the most influential states due to its size, not having a chapter of the organization in Texas could serve to be a disadvantage to Obama. Texas is mostly Republican and usually biased to Republican politics yet I believe it could be a swing state if an adequate Democratic view is available," said Jarren Small, a senior mass communication major.
Even without a local chapter, Greater Together Students for Obama is trying to still leave some influence on those willing to listen as it leaves directions to voter's registration and fundraising. Greater Together Students for Obama also shares personal testimonials from Obama voters; describing stories of their role on the campaign trail, the importance of their vote, and the issues they feel pertinent to the 2012 presidential consideration.
"It is important for students to assess where they are currently and where they plan to be in four years. They should ask themselves what role government will play in placing them there and then decide which candidate will better," Marcus Reshaud Washington, a sophomore chemical engineering major.
After the phase of voter's registration and moving closing to Nov. 6, Americans could step forward together to make history again to possibly swear in a black man for yet another presidential terms.
"The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create," foreruns the campaign's page yet leaves the lastly impression of the true impact of the young vote, your vote.
