Men's track and field take the gold
It was a good weekend in Birmingham, Ala. as the Prairie View A&M University men's track and field team took the throne as the 2013 Southwest Athletic Conference Indoor Champions at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Head Coach Chris Clay was named Men's Coach of the Year after guiding the Panthers to their first SWAC title since 2008 and fifth title overall the men's track and field team has won.
Finishing the first day of competition with a strong lead of 48 points, junior Pierre Shepherd out jumped the competition with a one and done jump of 6-07 ½ for the high jump gold.
Just two places behind him junior Preston Woodard finished third clearing a height of 6-04 ¼.
He won gold in the triple jump.
Prairie View took 16 points out of the high jump competition.
Junior Rashad Wilson finished third in long jump giving the Panthers six points out of the competition.
Freshman Dinaoli Adam and Sophomore Lucio Rosas racked up 14 points in the 3,000 meter run finishing behind Daniel Kibet of Mississippi Valley.
Adam finished with a time of 8:15.13, Rosas crossed the line with a time of 8:15.32.
Prairie View's distance medley finished second with the team of Sorone Batiste, James Evan, Dewaylon Wilson, and Lucio Rosas. They ran a time of 10:31.75 falling short of the SWAC record set by Prairie View in 2008.
Senior thrower Anthony Smith also contributed the first day of competition, scoring four points in the shot put.
On the last day of competition Sorone Batiste ran a personal best and set the new SWAC record in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:52.39.
The distance duo Adam and Rosas finished 3rd and 4th in the one mile run accumulating points for Prairie View.
The Panthers will use the time they have to regroup themselves again for competition, preparing for TSU relays March 14 in Houston, Texas. while others continue to train for Arkansas' Last Chance Meet.
