President George Wright hosts special seminar for young men
President George C. Wright gave a lecture Tuesday for male students titled "For The Gentlemen" in the auditorium at the Don K. Clark Juvenile Justice building.
The lecture was held at 6 p.m. to a full audience of men dressed in business casual attire. The men followed every word that came out of Wright's mouth with enthusiasm. Although female students were barred from attending this lecture Wright stated that he would hold a similar lecture dedicated to them.
"The people that put this together and I were thinking that we should hold a lecture that would inform men about relationships, sex, and money, but currently I'm expecting to hold one for women later this semester," said Wright.
Wright kept his audience entertained by explaining his theories about life through a series of anecdotes and personal stories. He also made the audience erupt into laughter throughout the lecture with the jokes he told.
Senior kinesiology major Rick Carmichael said, "One thing a lot of students don't know about president Wright is that his lectures are like stand-up comedy shows. He is really a hilarious person; he may come off intimidating to the people who haven't held a conversation with him, but he really is just so fun."
Wright started the lecture by speaking to the audience about incorporating their romantic partners into their recreational activities.
"There should be no such thing as a guys night or girls night, you should always try to incorporate your spouse or partner into your life," Wright said.
Money was also a topic Wright touched on in the lecture. He advised students on the different ways to save money and why it is important for students to save money before leaving college.
He talked about how relationships tend to work when every decision is made with both partners' input. He wanted the audience to know that to have a successful relationship each partner should let their significant other in on all the decisions they make.
Furthermore, Wright acknowledged that men and women view sex differently. He feels that men see sex as an act while women view it as a process.
He also touched on how being a father is not only beneficial to the child but can also benefit the father.
"I used to hate children, but when I had my kids I realized that I actually love small kids. I used to carry my kids until they were 10 and hand-fed them until they were 12," joked Wright.
He stressed that women serve a huge role in a child's life but he felt that the father should step in to regulate situations during the child's adult years.
He said, "I feel children need their mothers before the age of 17 because at that time children are more nurturing, but after that the father should come in and be a tie breaker."
Wright even spoke on gay relationships and marriages in the black community.
"A relationship no matter if you are gay or straight should not start before you are 17 and you should build a foundation first. He added, "If you took my class you know that I don't have an issue with gay people and I have stated before that one day I may walk with them during Pride," said Wright.
Junior business major Tyrell Irby was excited to hear the president speak and he felt that the president's thoughts about commitment was the best part of the lecture.
"I thought this was very intriguing and informational. I felt the best part was when he spoke about being committed to one woman and not over-indulging in the mass amount of women in college," said Irby.
Junior chemical engineering major Marcus Bell was pleased to attend the lecture.
"It was a really good speech and a great turnout, plus it's not that often that you get to see the president or have the opportunity to hear him speak," said Bell.
