Lady Panthers drop the ball against UAPB
Prairie View A&M was out-dueled by Arkansas-Pine Bluff on the volleyball court Tuesday night, losing 3-1 despite double-digit kill performances by three key Lady Panthers players.
Each set was decided by four points or less, and Prairie View A&M fell behind early in the match after losing both of the first two sets 25-23 to the Golden Lions.
Statistically the Lady Panthers had more kills than Arkansas-Pine Bluff. They tallied 50 kills compared to 49 for UAPB.
However, when attacking, blocking and service errors were combined Prairie View A&M had six more overall errors.
That proved to be the difference maker in the match.
The Lady Panthers won the third set 25-21, but they lost the final set of the match 25-22 to fall to 1-2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference competition.
Junior outside hitter Candyce Alexander set a career-high in kills with 15 against the Golden Lions with a .235 attack percentage.
She recorded a double-double, helping defensively with a team-high of 12 digs and three blocks (one solo block) to account for 17 points in the loss.
Junior middle blocker Janette Batista continued her aggressive play in recent contests by tallying 11 kills on 30 attacks. She also recorded five total blocks and five digs defensively.
Meanwhile senior outside Charae Caldwell accounted for her third double-digit kill performance in four games with 10. She helped out defensively with three total blocks.
Kelsey Espinosa, the reigning SWAC Setter of The Week, dished out 42 assists and had five kills with a .500 attack percentage.
She proved effective against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, but the Golden Lions managed to pull away.
Prairie View A&M returns home to face Grambling State thursday 10/10 at 7 p.m. in the William Nicks Building (The Baby Dome).
