Men speak on the concept a housewife

With more women in college and pushing for careers in the public sphere, less women are striving for a life in the domestic sphere and the concept of a housewife is losing respect.
According to some men, gender roles are becoming cloudier and the 1950s woman is becoming obsolete.
Senior criminal justice major Sean McLean said, "I believe a working woman is better because it is a lot easier when you have two incomes coming into a household as opposed to a lady that stays at home and just cleans and cooks."
McLean also believes that his wife will manage the household in the form of being in charge of a maid.
Others believe that the ideal woman has changed into a more complex figure.
"I think the ideal woman now is a woman that has a job, can support herself, and still can make a man feel like a man," said assistant director of the office of student engagement Orok Orok.
Men like senior civil and environmental engineering major Osiris Muhammad believe that men today are not interested in the 1950s Jane Cleaver type of homemaker.
McLean and Orok agree that there is a battle between independence and dependence.
"You have to learn to adapt to every situation you are in. She has to understand that she has multiple roles: a wife, a worker, a baby sitter," McLean said.
He also said that sometimes men allow women to take on a bigger financial burden.
"Love plays a big role," said Mclean. "Some men think, 'Well, she loves me so she will do it for me. I think that is better to work as a team," he said. "The economy is crazy so I believe there should be two people working."
Muhammad said believes that a housewife can be accepted by society.
"It is not the job that men respect. It is the character," he said.
Gender roles are changing. The idea of a woman is no longer centered around having children, managing a household and satisfying her husband's every need.
"There are roles that did exist," said Orok. "I think a lot of people are fighting to get rid of gender roles, but I think now it boils down to the essence of a particular relationship. I see a lot of relationships that are successful and are still traditional."
Independent women pose another problem for relationships.
"In the past, you had to make sure that the woman that you wanted to be with fit into your life and your lifestyle. Now, you have to make sure that you fit into her life which could be a house and career. The two worlds have to fit together," said Orok.
Others believes that society has developed past the idea that women lead the home and men have to provide for the family.
Muhammad said, "Men cook and clean just as much as women provide."
This situation is not impossible. Traditional relationships can still be found.
"I hear a lot of guys talk about the woman who is independent and strong, but she still knows how to let a man be a man. An ideal woman is one who can respect a man if he desires to exist in a traditional role of a man," said Orok.
According to Orok, the ultimate challenge is to love someone the way they need to be loved. The career comes with smaller challenges.
"You can do that and enjoy it, but the ultimate goal should be within the family," he said.
