National NSBE conference awards Prairie View chapter
The Prairie View A&M University chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers attended the 39th annual National NSBE conference in Indianapolis, Ind. March 27-31 and won the 2011-2012 Smartest Chapter in NSBE award with an overall chapter GPA of 3.52/4.00. The organization also won the 2012 - 2013 Most Distinguished Large Member Chapter award.
Most Distinguished Large Member Chapter award is the highest award that a NSBE chapter can receive and is based on portrayal of the NSBE mission, which is "to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community."
This is the first time that the PV NSBE chapter has received this award since being founded in 1983 by Charlie Tolliver, electrical engineering professor.
Member and senior electrical engineering major Josh James said, "I've been a member of NSBE for three years and I think winning this award is quite astonishing. I believe the credit goes to all of the individuals who not only put in work this year but also the previous years. This will ultimately set the standard for those to come in the future."
Due to this award the PV NSBE has attracted more recruiters to Prairie View A&M University. The organization has now created relationships with companies such as CH2MHill, Bechtel and John Deere.
Some of the events that occurred this school year and were considered for winning an award are the Walk for Education in September with the University of Houston and Texas Southern University NSBE chapters and the Houston Alumni Extension and an engineering competition at Barbara Jordan High School.
