Is this the best you can do?
Although I would like to offer congratulations to the students who were honored at last week's annual honors convocation, it is essential to ask students and administration one simple question, is this the best you can do?
Prairie View A&M University claims to pride itself on producing productive people and leaders in society but awards students for mediocrity.
Only at Prairie View is a 3.0 grade point average a cause for celebration. Other schools recognize honors as being a grade point average of 3.5 or above.
In numerical terms, a 3.0 out of a 4.0 is a 75 percent. Well, congratulations students on receiving a strong C average, you are now officially barely getting by.
You are doing your job.
As students, it is your job to show up to every class, to show up on time, and to perform to the highest of academic standards.
In life, there is no such thing as "good enough for Prairie View," and students and faculty of this university need to not only recognize this, but to encourage further success.
There are so many opportunities here on campus, from outstanding professors to organizations that are not offered on other campuses.
It is essential to remember that you chose to go to this university and it is your duty, no your obligation, to represent Prairie View to the outside community as a university that is to be respected for producing high quality individuals who are successful and productive members of society.
Not individuals who are good enough.
If administration feels that they need to reward students for doing their job then so be it, but I challenge all the students here to prove to them that it is not essential.
All of you who were recognized for your 3.0 GPA, prove to administration that you can do better and get that 3.5 next semester. Everyone who got a 3.5, try to take it to the next level, because once you graduate, good enough for Prairie View will no longer be enough.
