Leach joins office of student engagement
The office of student engagement is welcoming a new face to the department which houses the Campus Activities Board, Student Government Association, Greek life, and student publications.
Christian Leach, the new program coordinator is a native of Fort Worth, Texas, but attended college at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.
Leach received her bachelor's degree in broadcast mass media in May 2012 and interned with Oklahoma City Thunder and CBS Sports Network.
"I was treasurer of the National Association of Black Journalists, I was a member of the Black Student Association on campus, I became an AKA and I was on the Campus Activities Council," said Leach.
Leach is the advisor for the Miss Prairie View scholarship pageant, Greek life, student publications and works with the homecoming committee.
"I love the enthusiasm of the students and student engagement," she said. "The students that are involved are really involved."
Leach would like to see many changes within the office of student engagement.
"What makes me sad is I would like more students to have that same enthusiasm," she said. "It is the same students, and they are exhausted. There are so many opportunities for other students to come in and do things in this department."
Leach is also working on advertising the office of student engagement so students can become involved in campus activities.
"These organizations need you, but you also need them," she said. "I want people to be concerned about their resumes, what they can do to better themselves while they are here, and what they are going to be doing when they leave here."
Leach is very excited about working with the Miss Prairie View pageant.
"I have been working with pageants for the past four years," she said. "As soon as I got to Oklahoma I became the event coordinator for the Miss Black University of Oklahoma pageant, so I will be doing the same thing here as I was doing there."
Before becoming the program coordinator for the office of student engagement, Leach could not see herself at a historically black university.
"I had a plan for my life and then God had a plan for my life," she said. "God put me here for a purpose and I will take it a day at a time to see what that purpose is."
Eventually, Leach would like to go into radio.
"I want to have my own radio variety show with different guests talking about fashion and what is popular in the news," she said. But for right now, I am excited to get in there and get all of the positive things that Prairie View offers out there."
