Thomas-Smith, Byars groom women

Provost and senior vice president of academic affairs Joahanne Thomas-Smith and vice president for institutional relations Lauretta Byars joined forces in creating an organization for women called the Women's Leadership Council.

The council is to help young women obtain information on appearance, self-esteem and professionalism. It is a way to ensure that the interest, achievement and potential of women are enhanced and celebrated.

Thomas-Smith said, "Women have potential and don't believe in themselves. This program is a way to help them."

Two major events that the council hosts are Women's History Month and Hattitude.

Women's History Month is a chance for women who have made an impact on the community to come to Prairie View and talk to young women. 

Hattitude is an annual program that allows young women to dress in dresses and hats and have evening tea. Throughout the tea, women listen to guest speakers and learn about etiquette. For the program, the young women, with the help of an expert, are allowed to make their own hats in any size and decoration.

Byars said, "I love doing this for young women and I want to be able to share things with them to help them grow."

The council has a female staff that helps mentor the women in certain areas, and after a year, the participants show significant growth.

Young women can get involved with the council by participating in some of the activities that the council puts on throughout the school year.

Byars said, "The program is a good thing for young women that are looking for help or just want to get involved with the school."
