Students urged to resist distractions
The fall semester general student assembly was held in the William "Billy" J. Nicks Field House Sept. 3.
President George Wright addressed students concerning what the university is expecting this year. Wright challenged students to have confidence in themselves and in what they stand for. He stressed the importance of having a 'moral compass' to guide them through their college experience.
"Students you have to believe in yourself... and ask is it worth it," Wright said.
Wright also told students that they needed to make sure they were gaining their full experience, and receiving everything they were paying for. He also encouraged students to work hard.
"There is value in your education," said Wright.
According to Wright, students sometimes become distracted by peers, jobs and extracurricular activities, and forget that they are ultimately in college to receive an education.
"Students, you must keep your eye on the prize. Don't get distracted by all of the obstacles put in your way," Wright said. "The journey will not be easy but can be accomplished."
Dr. E. Joahanne Thomas-Smith, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, also spoke to students about striving for their best.
"You don't get quality because you talk about it or wish for it. You get it because you work for it," Thomas-Smith said. "...you came to graduate and not 'quituate.'"
Miss Prairie View Kara Willis presided over the program, and introduced "Quality Without Compromise" as the university's theme for the school year.
Student Life Director for University College Shandon Neal and Director of University Relations Sheleah Hughes acknowledged each recognized sporting team in honor of 100 years of the Prairie View athletics program.
