Mayor Jackson gives book review

Prairie View A&M University recognized Frank D. Jackson, mayor and governmental relations officer, Monday for his new book "The History of Prairie View, Texas."

Although the book tells the history of the city of Prairie View, it features information on the university as well.

"You cannot tell the story of the city without incorporating the university and you can't tell the history of Texas without recognizing Prairie View," said Jackson. "Prairie View tells the complete story. If you ever want to know how far African Americans in Texas have advanced just look at Prairie View."

During his book review, Jackson explained exactly why black people as a race have the mentality they do regarding politics, the economy and themselves. He also said that cussing was a part of slave culture, and whenever you hear people today cuss with ease, it is because our culture is advancing slowly and that we're living in ignorance.

"Once you understand the dynamics of society, you can start to see how our minds have been shaped," said Jackson. "We are mutants. We know more about other people's history than our own...that's not our story."

Jackson stressed that students need to become more aware of their university's history.

"You better open up your ears and listen to the history. This is your life. If you come here and learn nothing, shame on you," he said.
