SGA rallies students to register
The Student Government Association and other leading organizations on campus came together and held a campus-wide voter registration drive Sept. 29 - Oct. 1.
Throughout the week different organizations adopted academic buildings around the campus and University College and registered as many people to vote as possible.
Some of the organizations involved in the registration drive were Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Gamma Gamma Sigma Sorority, Inc., and PALS.
Although the PALS adopted a building during the week, they have actually been pushing the freshmen to register since Panther Camp.
"[PALS] realized that you get more done if you work in a group, so we decided to help the others," said senior architecture major Harris D. Brown. Brown also stressed that it is important to vote in elections other than just the upcoming presidential election. "It's important to voice your opinion. We as African Americans haven't always had that right, so why not vote?"
Organizations realized that a lot of the students on campus were already registered prior to their drive, but they were still adamant in getting every possible student.
"I think every time a student registers to vote it's a success no matter how many because every vote counts," said senior political science major Charli Cooksey.
Some of the reasons students are so eager to vote in the upcoming election is because one of the candidates is a minority and that they are losing faith in how the country is currently being handled. Some current issues that young adults feel directly affect them and their voting decision are gas prices, the war on Iraq, and taxes.
"The war on Iraq is a big issue for me because I have family members who are serving in Iraq right now," said junior communications major Domonique Brooks. "It seems as if we will not be ending the war anytime soon and it would be nice to have a president who will actually work to bring our troops back home."
