UMA exhibits Black surgeons
The Undergraduate Medical Academy is hosting its second traveling exhibition.
The exhibit, "Opening Door," highlights three separate time periods of African-American academic surgeons.
The three time periods of are "Pioneers in Academic Surgery," "Contemporary Pioneers," and "New Frontiers in Academic Surgery."
The idea to host these exhibitions originated from the National Library of Medicine, which hosts exhibits such as these all across the nation.
The medical pioneers included in the exhibit are Lt. Colonel Alexander T. Augusta, the only African-American and one of the first five faculty members of the Howard University College of Medicine, Nathan F. Mossell, Daniel H. Williams, and Charles R. Drew.
The contemporary doctors the exhibit features include Alexa I. Canday, Claude H. Organ, and Lasalle D. Lefall, a leading oncology surgeon and educator.
The exhibit also profiles new medical professionals such as Dr. Karen L. Butler, professor at Texas A&M, and Benjamin S. Carson, author of ‘Gifted Hands' and ‘Think Big'.
"Opening Doors" went on display in the O'Banion New Science building Aug. 15 and ends today.
