Student counseling center takes on mental health
In preparation of its grand opening Friday, the new student counseling center held "A Cry for Understanding," a mental health seminar on relationships Tuesday.
Presented by director of student counseling services, Bernadine Duncan the seminar explained why men and women have trouble understanding each other.
The director began her presentation explaining the many differences between men and women that hinder communication and emotional growth in a relationship.
Duncan said, "Because most men are emotionally guarded and most women like to share their feelings, friction creates frustration and turns into anger. Because couples don't express their expectations upfront in a relationship, disappointment and bitterness manifests."
Duncan said the best thing for a relationship is understanding and communication.
"You can't change or mold someone into what you want," said Duncan. "Successful relationships progress through the ‘Primary Love Relationship Stages,' where the attractions and illusions of a new relationship develop into the knowledge and value of an advanced relationship."
The director closed her presentation with the reading of 1st Corinthians 13:14 and "Wedding Pledge" by Frederick Douglas Harper.
"Love is the most powerful force on this earth," said Duncan.
