The annual Gospel Fest kicked off Prairie View A&M University's homecoming with a performance by special guest Kurt Carr.
Students, faculty and staff, and alumni were able to praise and worship along with the organizations from around the campus, including Baptist Student Movement, PV Mime, the University College Choir and the praise dancers.
In addition, the campus was honored to have world renowned gospel singer Kurt Carr.
Many feel the Gospel Fest gives students a chance to express their faith together.
Graduate student and former Student Government Association vice president Nicholas Hallman said, "Our campus is faith based, but too many of us are afraid of the perception others have of us and because of that, we do not honor and praise God like we should."
Hallman said that this event gives students an opportunity to do that.
Students, especially during homecoming week, get too wrapped up in their school work, organizations, and other activities.
Alumna Hondrea Pickett described how important this event is to her and the student body.
"Almost every year at homecoming it seems like we lose a student. I think it's important to have the Gospel Fest before homecoming because it blesses every student. I thank God for this opportunity and that people were able to gat saved," said Pickett.
Senior performance arts major Mahalia Smith said it was a blessing to be able to praise and worship at this year's Gospel Fest after a car accident Friday night on the way to a BSM performance.
"It was honestly a blessing to be here," she said. "God is so awesome."
The auditorium was filled with emotional students.
Hands were outstretched and faces were filled with tears, as students thanked and praised God for everything that God has brought them through.
"A lot of people needed this. We needed to realize that we cannot rush God. I've heard so many people say that because Gospel Fest starts the homecoming week and they think twice before doing things that they would normally do," said Smith.
Carr rewarded audience members for their knowledge of the words to gospel songs or ability to sanctifying praise dance
Kurt Carr prompted all students to never allow people or circumstances to affect their faith in what God has promised.
Carr said, "What God has for you is for you."
