Career Services refurbishes resource laboratory
As the fall 2009 semester comes to closure, PVAMU's Career and Outreach Services Center attempts to assist students in finding careers and determining their majors by making renovations to their career resource center.
Undergoing renovations since the summer, the lab is scheduled to be completed and will open in the spring of 2010. It will be used to assist students with finding jobs, majors and applying for scholarships and graduate school if necessary.
The resource center will offer three of the most reliable career assessment programs available (Discover, SIGI Plus and Focus) to test skills and personality traits in order to determine majors for those students who might be undecided. These are the tools that help students work toward being successful, identify with who they are and what goals they would like to achieve.
The career services center currently assists students with finding employment and post-college activities, such as internships, but now it will be easier for students to receive that assistance because of the technological options available. Some students might not be in a position to come into the lab so there is the option of just sending information, such as test scores, and resumes and applications between computers. There will be five brand new computers installed with the latest software placed in the lab so students will be able to apply online and tweak resumes as well.
The resource center will be located in room 205 of Evans Hall. It will be open Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the same hours as the career service center. Necessary adjustments are being made for graduate students whose schedules are different from the underclassmen.
Herbert R. Thomas, placement coordinator in the Career and Outreach Services Center, had this to say, "I believe that the opportunities for students to be successful are there, students must take advantage of them. The resource lab will assist you to reach the goals you want to achieve."
