20-point deficit drowns Alcorn State in defeat
The Prairie View Lady Panthers stormed past Alcorn State last Thursday, 67-47, tying their SWAC record with Jackson State and Alabama A&M. The Panthers now stand 13-4 in conference and have an overall record of 15-3.After trailing behind the Lady Braves in most of the first half, Prairie View came back with only a few minutes left in the half, to take the lead 28-23. Alcorn State got into foul trouble early in the game, providing Prairie View the bonus opportunity for free throw shooting.
The Lady Panthers led the entire second half, outscoring their opponents by 15 points. After fighting around Alcorn State's 6'-5" Tina Huff who had 10 game blocks, the Panthers found their groove, and easily led their team to a much needed conference win.
The Lady Braves supplied the only technical foul during the game. With only five minutes left, the Braves were allowed no more than 10 points added to their score because of Lady Panthers' defense. Senior Tanesha Barefield hit a quick three-pointer with less than 30 seconds in the game and scored another fast break layup with only seven seconds remaining.
Stokes grabbed 17 rebounds and scored 13 points while freshmen Gaati Werema had 17 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers to their fifth straight SWAC win.
Werema and Waco, Texas, native Candice Thomas were both recognized as player and newcomer of the week Feb. 20-26. Werema averages 10 rebounds and 15.8 points a game, while Newcomer Thomas averages 10 points a game with a season record of 77 assists and 49 steals. Thomas added 12 points to Thursday night's game.
