Disaster in Nairobi evokes emotion among students
Students are still in shock after the horrific four-day terrorist attack that took place in a mall in Nairobi, Kenya.
Kenyan authorities continue to discover bodies under the rumble in the mall. At least 61 civilians and six Kenyan security officers have been found dead. The United States' security and law enforcement are trying to gain access to the mall to see if any Americans were involved in the attack.
FBI experts from the Terrorist Explosive Device Analytic Center are assisting Kenyans with analyzing explosives and fingerprints. According to officials, the United States wants autopsy and fingerprints to help determine whether Americans were involved.
According to an official statement released by the United States this was meticulously planned.
"This is not something where the attackers walked in the mall all of a sudden," the official said.
President Uhuru Kenyatta still wants to learn how terrorist group Al-Shabaab was able to execute this attack. So far, it has been reported that the Al-Shabaab leader Ahmed Abdi Godane ordered the terrorist attack.
"I think they need to find out what's going on over there. That is a horrible situation to have going on in that country. I think if we don't act we might have that terrorist group do something to our country," said freshman undecided major Calvin Prangs.
They will also analyze grenades and heavy-belt fed machine guns, since the Al-Shabaab are known for having grenade attacks.
A Caucasian woman was spotted in the mall as an attacker. Authorities believe this woman is the terrorist known as the White Widow. Authorities discovered bomb-making materials in her apartment in 2011, but she was able to escape.
Even though Kenyan Forces discovered the terrorists, it is not certain whether or not some were able to escape during all the turmoil.
"This seem like it is happening all around the world. Whenever you turn on the news you see something about terrorists attacks, and it is about time the United Nations did something about it," said sophomore sociology major Jeff Green.
According to USA Today, Kenyan officials said the death count could increase by 60 or more.
Kenyatta stated that four more suspects have been arrested and that up to 175 people may be injured due to the tragedy. The attackers walked in the mall and started shooting. They were mainly after a body count, and not hostages.
"Since I am of Kenyan descent I feel hurt by this news. It destroys me in the inside to hear about my home country going through such turmoil and problems," said senior nutrition major Emmanuel Chiumbo.
Reports say Kenyan forces have killed five of the terrorists and 11 people are in custody because of possible links to the attack. The attackers were well equipped to kill a large number of civilians, and still fend off Kenyan security forces for four days.
