Crime rate improves
The Department of Public Safety and Student Conduct Officer Timothy Albert are convinced that campus safety and student conduct issues have improved in comparison to that of last year.
Although this semester saw eight sexual assault cases, the highest number in any fall semester over the past three years, there were only five weapon charges on campus, and one expulsion this semester.
According to Albert, the most common acts of misconduct on campus are - in his own words - "the recreational distribution and use of marijuana," disorderly conduct both on and off campus, sexual assault, weapons on campus, and domestic violence. All of these incidents are rising on college campuses across Texas, especially in the A&M System.
After adding seven mobile bicycle patrol units, there are now 22 officers. With a total of 32 emergency phone security post, PVAMU's DPS beefed up its security to ensure campus-wide safety. The amount of break-ins and theft on campus has been reduced, resulting in a 90 percent recovery rate according to DPS statistics.
Officer Frank Wallace said, "First off, the troublemakers are gone. The GPA requirement has helped out a lot, and the number of female altercations seem to outnumber the number of male of altercations."
