Student nursing association president makes history

For the first time, the Prairie View Student Nursing Association has a Hispanic president, Leanna Correa, sophomore pre-nursing major and former community service officer.

According to the program coordinator for pre-nursing and PVSNA advisor Flora Thomas, Correa could possibly hold the position of president for a full year.

Thomas said, "She has been heavily involved with PVSNA since she joined, and I personally believe because of her work ethic, beautiful personality and integral character she will be an outstanding leader and continue the legacy of the presidents before her."

Continuing the diversity, this year's PVSNA vice president is  a male sophomore pre-nursing major, James Gully.

Correa said, "People were shocked that I won but Prairie View is diverse now and I am very proud to be a part of change, everyone is equal. Whoever is chosen gets elected."

She plans to implement more activities such as social involvement on campus with other organizations, informational sessions to let students know about the HESI exam and other requirements to succeed in nursing school and continue.

Despite all the pressure that is being placed on her at this time, Correa remains humble and grateful for the opportunity.

"I feel excited, I take it as a privilege that the members of my organization thought enough of me to elect me," Correa said. "I am a team player as I told them in the elections I am going to do my best! It means a lot to know that they trust me."
