Fashion show or college campus?

Campus fashion creates growing concern

Many argue that first impressions are vital when it comes to a instructor-student relationship. Some professors feel obliged to set their own classroom rules regarding dress codes.

Amber Johnson, assistant professor  of communication, said, "How you express your identity is what matters, and if you express your identity through fashion, then it definitely matters in the learning environment."

With new styles of tribal wear for ladies and tank tops for men, back to school fashion is the trending topic. Unfortunately, some trends flirt with the lines of appropriate and inappropriate attire.  With new styles and daring fashion statements emerging campus-wide, many say that some students don't know what they need to wear around campus.

Similar to other public institutions of higher learning, Prairie View A & M University does not have an official school dress code. However, the MSC dining hall enforces separate policies listed on page 24 of the Student Code of Conduct, which are violated frequently.

Fashion is important among college students and faculty, but some argue that there should be a specific style appropriate for a classroom setting.

Student Government Association President Jarren Small, said, "For the females, short or loose clothing can be a distraction to students and even sometimes the professors. For males, sagging pants, tank tops, and muscle shirts do not make good impressions."

Despite the leniency on dress code at PVAMU, other institutions of higher learning including as Morehouse College, Howard University, and Grambling State University have dress codes that are severely enforced.

Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga., does not allow "grillz" to be worn on campus or at any university-sponsored event.

At Howard University in Washington D.C., dress code is only applicable to employees. Students are allowed to dress freely to avoid discriminations on the basis of personal appearance.

Grambling State University's policy speaks on wearing hats, caps, do-rags, skullcaps, bandanas, stocking caps and/or other headgear is considered inappropriate.
