The recent reporting of 21 cases of the West Nile Virus has the citizens of Hempstead extremely cautious and aware of their surroundings.
In addition, Harris County has also experienced its own influx of cases with a whopping 51 reported cases.
According to Fox 26, a Hempstead local died last Friday from the virus.
After this incident, an emphasis on health has been made throughout the community. Clinics and pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens have focused their advertisements to encourage young adults to receive their flu shots before the winter season.
West Nile virus is easily contracted from person to person, students should educate themselves about their symptoms.
According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms such as fever, headache and fatigue, aching of the body, skin rash, and swollen lymph glands are all typical signs of the West Nile virus.
These symptoms may seem regular flu symptoms. However, to attain a quick recovery and assurance that it is not the West Nile virus, it is advised to get a check up at a local medical center to receive treatment.
