Stress takes toll on students
Most college students have one thing in common which is stress. It comes in many different levels which is why it is important to have a special method to relieve stress because it affects one's mind, body and health.
There are countless number of things that cause students to stress.
Tierra Chapman, a communications major, said, "Multiple tests, homework, peer pressure, distractions and financial aid are some of the things that can stress students out."
Unmanaged stress can lead to an increased risk of both mental and physical problems, such as infection, illness, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, along with depressive and anxiety disorders.
Chapman said, "I respond to stress by cooking, working out, isolating myself and dancing. Take it one day at a time. You are capable of handling it. Before you are anything, you are a student. Student priorities are most important."
Some students allow stress to overpower them while others manage their stress in better ways.
Junior criminal justice major, Jessica Lafond said, "I feel some handle it well. Whenever I am down about something I try to look on the bright side of things which limits pity parties."
"Stress is also a gateway to depression," Lafond said. "Some turn to alcohol, drugs, and sometimes suicide. I think your faith system and faith in God determines a lot. Just because I believe that bad days do not last forever. I had a friend who recently committed suicide a few months ago, from depression...so I think a lot of things fall into play when stress/depression is involved."
It is important to stay strong during rough times and find a good stress reliever in order to keep a healthy balance.
