Panther Ambassadors and Special Programs host One Down Summit
The University College at Prairie View A&M University not only houses freshmen, but provides academic counseling, helps transition high school graduates into college students, and hosts events promoting health, continuing education and campus life.
After leaving the UC, students must learn about financial aid deadlines, how to apply for upperclassmen housing, and find their major specific academic counselor.
In an effort to retain the sophomore class and aid in the sophomore transition out of the UC, Panther Ambassadors and the office of special programs and cultural series created the One Down Summit, which was held Nov. 9-10.
"Overall, we accomplished what we wanted, to open the doors for sophomores," said special programs coordinator Isis McCraw.
The summit consisted of four student lead sessions: Other Pieces, Not Cheating if its Right There, Do Wrongs Make a Right, and Cloudy Days. Prairie View alumni and students such as Student Government President Harrison Blair and Miss Prairie View 2012-2013, Chasmine Cousins, spoke during the sessions.
There was also an administrative session where students were able to have their questions answered by a financial aid representative, the University Village housing director Ronnie Davis, and an academic administrator.
"I am very satisfied that the Ambassadors could get it up and running," said senior English major and Panther Ambassador president Alexa Lopez. "They got the word out. As long as one person was affected, we did our job."
