The presidential campaign finally came to an end Tuesday night with the election of President Barack Obama to a second term in office.
Around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday night, television networks declared victory for the president, who has now earned four more years in the White House.
Students from Prairie View A&M University marched to the polls at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Students and Prairie View residents were still lined up outside of the Waller County Community Center waiting to cast their ballots well after 7 p.m. Tuesday evening.
"This election is important because not only are you voting for the next president, but local officials," said senior management information systems major Damian Young. "These are the people who truly effect your community so if you want to see a change where you live, this is the opportunity to let your voice be heard."
Students have been paying attention to the fundamental issues surrounding this year's presidential election.
"I believe that student funding is a really important issue and if we do not get who we want in office, the interest on student loans will skyrocket," said junior music major Willie Rollerson III.
Each election is important, but some people believe that college is the time establish a spirit of democracy.
"Voting is important because our ancestors fought for us to be able to vote," said student government association vice president Jarrick Brown. "A lot of people feel like their vote does not count, but without your vote you have no voice."
