Rumors of homecoming cancellation put to rest
Screaming fans, returning alumni, the annual convert, the game against Mississippi Valley State, and the traditional events are set for the week of Oct. 13-19, during Prairie View A&M University's homecoming.
This year's concert performers are said to be Juicy J, Elle Varner, and Doug E Fresh.
Events such as a Scavenger Hunt, an Old School Carnival, and Campus Decorating will take place during the week. Further into the week there will be a Poetry Jazz night, Casino night, Mr. and Mrs. Prairie View Coronation Ball, the tent party, and the step show.
The week's festivities end Oct. 19 with a morning parade in which President Wright will serve as this year's Grand Marshal, celebrating his 10years as president of the university.
"I expect this year's homecoming to be exciting as usual. I'm looking forward to many events, from the coronation ball to the tent party," said junior chemical engineering major Candria Jones.
Rumors of a possible cancellation of this year's homecoming swarmed the Hill as the semester came to an end last year due to the unruly behavior of some students as they celebrated some of the homecoming traditions.
According to executive director of communications, Sheleah Reed, homecoming is never planned to be cancelled. However, the actions of a few students caused the associate vice president Miron P. Billingsley to challenge the student body to consider a year without homecoming activities.
"As always, PVAMU's homecoming festivities are filled with excitement, joy and offers a festive environment," Reed said.
Senior mass communication major Chappell Moore, commented on the rumored cancellations.
Moore said, "Honestly, I can completely understand why they wanted to cancel homecoming; students here acted as if they never celebrated homecoming before. It was an embarrassment for me and I know for others, but I am glad to see that they are giving students another opportunity to regain themselves for their behavior from last year's homecoming. Homecoming is a tradition for everyone to come together to enjoy here on the Hill; if there were no homecoming I wonder how PV would survive."
Some students differed in rumors of the homecoming committee canceling the weeklong traditions.
Senior business marketing major James Brooks said, "I think it will be great. We're supposed to have Juicy J and someone else, but I'm just happy that I can finally participate in some of the events. As far as it almost being cancelled, I have no comment on it. I can't speak on a subject I know nothing about."
