Miss PVAMU hosts first seminar to empower female students

 The women of Prairie View A&M University came out yesterday to Miss Prairie View A&M University's Absolutely Beautiful seminar, co-hosted with Club Chic.
Angel Duncan, Kristen Wells-Lewis, and Ebony Washington led the panel discussion. They were able to share their stories on how they have transformed on their journeys as young women.
The seminar encouraged women to be empowered and to uplift one another as well as themselves.
Breanna Green, Miss Prairie View A&M University, and Kariss Gordon, president of Club Chic, wanted to speak to women onthe university campus about this topic.
"We really want our ladies on campus to understand that they are beautiful inside and out," said Green.
With a great turnout of young women, the collaboration of Miss PVAMU and Club Chic found that it was a great opportunity to show the support for empowerment that women have on this campus.
"The concept of knowing who you are inside and out correlates with our mission for Club Chic overall, which actually helps us to empower each other, to actually stay motivated to keep respect of ourselves," said Gordon. "There are going to be times where you wanna give in to the pressure of actually not being who you really are, but the concept of Club Chic is to empower you as a woman to realize you are who you are for reason and this seminar was perfect for that.
Junior human performance major Angel Duncan's new life journey began when she decided to cut off all of her hair and also making the choice to become less superficial.
"I wanted to portray a woman who not only promotes confidence, but true confidence; I want to be the woman that's actually living," she said about cutting off her hair.
On the other hand, senior business management major Ebony Washington began a new life journey when she took it upon herself to lose more than 90 pounds.
"I was happy with the way I was but I decided to start eating healthy, I wanted to start not loving my body but loving it more than I thought I did. It was hard to find clothes that fit right, I was tired of that, so I decided to take control and say love yourself more," Washington said.
Senior biology major Kristen Wells-Lewis spoke to the ladies about being self-aware of the attitude they portray to others.
She said, "It's really important to evaluate yourself, where you can move forward, and then share your story to help someone else. Think about the things you love about yourself, what you can improve about yourself and most importantly what you have mastered and share that with someone else so they can benefit from it."
The ladies on the panel allowed the audience to hear their stories and understand that as Miss PVAMU said, "There is a transformation process that everyone must go through, though they may not be fully aware of this. I wanted to allow others to share their stories to possibly help anyone going through their transformations."
Cynthia Gabriel, Mary Kay interim director and consultant, gave insight into how even though the company specializes in makeup, the brand itself is about empowering women in seeing that they are already beautiful, they are only there to enhance that beauty when women are looking for products.
She allowed the women to sign up for free facials, as well as offer opportunities for employment as Mary Kay consultants.
As the event came to a close, many of the young ladies thanked the women of the panel and the host for a great night.
Freshman nursing major Andrea Franklin said, "The event was very inspiring, and I learned that I shouldn't care about what others think about me and to just love myself the way I am."
"This event allowed young women to be empowered, "said senior psychology major Jasmine Thombs. "Women need to be able to uplift one another and try not to have so much pride that we don't allow ourselves to do that."
As the crowd of young women left the event, they were left with the message to inspire others as well as themselves.
