School of Architecture celebrates Brown's retirement
The Prairie View A&M School of Architecture honored Dr. Marshall V. Brown at the 9th Annual Scholarship Banquet hosted by Mr. and Miss Architecture 2012-2013 Oswald Nixon and Courtney Abney, Oct. 18.
The celebration was a time to pay homage to a friend, professor, mentor and colleague. Special guests included Mayor Frank Jackson of Prairie View, Nathelyne Archie Kennedy, and Dr. Joahanne Thomas-Smith, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs.
Brown earned his Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering from Prairie View and a Master of Architecture from Texas A&M University. "Attending Prairie View A&M University is a Brown family legacy," Brown said. "I was very active on campus; I was a member of the 1956-1960 championship tennis teams." It was the relationships with classmates that I remember the best."
The students of the School of Architecture also paid tribute to Brown through presentations, musical selections and service.
Ellison Joiner, a senior architecture and construction science major, said, "I am happy for him. I wish him much success in his future endeavors. He is a good man, he had a lot of stories and experiences to share with us. One of the funniest quotes I can remember is one day in lecture he said, 'Romance without finance does not last too long.' "
Gifts were presented to Brown by the Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society, American General Contractors, and American Institute of Architecture students.
Jackson and the City of Prairie View declared Oct. 18 Marshall V. Brown day.
To conclude the celebration, Dr. Ikhas Sabouni, dean for the School of Architecture, gave honor to Brown for his service and dedication to the university and the students.
"I want to thank him for all the years he invested in the school to ensure that students received the best education possible. His investment was one of permanence and the Marshall Brown Scholarship will ensure his legacy for generations to come," said Sabouni.
