Usually college graduates enter the work force with concerns of how their résumés may stand out and appeal to potential employers, but employers like Enterasys Networks are no longer looking at candidates paper submission, rather their Twitter.
"I recently applied for Teach For America which is a pretty competitive organization to become a part of so I probably reviewed my resume nearly 50 times before I hit the submit button. I wanted everything to be perfect while making sure I was showing the recruiters what they wanted," said DJ Banks, a senior mass communication major.
Once upon a time using fancy paper and an expensive stamp was enough to bump a resume to the top of the submissions pile. Now a resume full of impressive credentials can be overlooked and replaced by a few tweets.
Since the evolution of Internet and technology, applicants and employers are beginning to incorporate more technology and even social networks into the hiring process.
Applicants have slowly shifted to multimedia filled resumes and portfolios while others have resorted to posting their resumes on their websites and social networks.
"The paper résumé is dead. The Web is your résumé. Social networks are your mass references," said Vala Afshar, chief marketing officer at Enterasys Networks in a recent interview with USA Today.
Afshar and Enterasys Networks represent one of many employers who are looking beyond paper submissions thus giving an advantage to applicants with a constant Internet presence. However, the context and content of posts may sway a recruiter closer or farther from a particular candidate.
"Think of it as a 140-character job interview," said Afshar.
In the 2012 Jobvite Social Recruiting Survey, 92 percent of employers use or plan to use social networks during recruiting while 73 percent have hired candidates due to the social media presence.
With new invention come innovation so many employers will change their focus away from paper resumes, making it important for college graduates to remain aware of the changing times, and adjust accordingly.
